Someone can be called <\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bj\u00f6rn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bear) or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stig<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (path) and have the surname <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bergman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (mountain man),<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lindgren<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (linden branch) or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grankvist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (spruce twig).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who are curious about the language are probably familiar with the Swedes&#8217; love of nature, which extends to the rest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/in2.yvonnefuertes.com\/en\/nordic-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nordic countries<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a good start to the adventure of learning a language and allows us to begin to understand some of the ramifications we were talking about. Without that knowledge of nature, the people of the north would not have survived. <a href=\"https:\/\/in2.yvonnefuertes.com\/en\/learning-swedish-involves-exploring-the-forests-of-sweden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The student who begins will become aware of this and other peculiarities related to Swedish culture<\/a>. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about grammar, what about pronunciation, and is Swedish a difficult language? These are the questions most frequently asked by students. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer will depend on the learner&#8217;s mother tongue and what other languages he or she is proficient in.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Swedish language, there are words of German, French and, especially in recent times, English origin. Borrowings are usually adapted to the Swedish spelling.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, when we want to refer to an armchair, we will speak of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f\u00e5t\u00f6lj,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adapting the French word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fauteuil,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and when we talk about an e-mail, we will write <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mejl, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adapting the English word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">email<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let us therefore return to the questions posed and look at some of the main characteristics of Swedish:<\/span><\/p><h2>The verbs<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The verbal system will seem simple to us since <strong>it lacks personal desinences<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, the verb <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arbeta <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(to work) we will conjugate it without making any change according to the pronoun, so it will be essential to include the subject.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jag arbetar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (I work) <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Du arbetar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (you work)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Han arbetar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (he works)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hon arbetar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(she works)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vi arbet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ar (we work)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor arbetar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (you work)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From arbetar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (they work)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To form the verb tenses, we add the appropriate endings to the imperative, again without changes according to the subject.<\/span><\/p><h2>Nouns<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>There are two grammatical genders in Swedish<\/strong>, known as the form <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">utrum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the form <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ett<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neutrum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p><p>We cannot know whether a word is &#8211;<em>en<\/em> or &#8211;<em>ett<\/em>, but there are some clues. For example, most living things will be &#8211;<em>en<\/em>.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The definite noun is postponed by placing the article <em>-en<\/em> or <em>-ett<\/em> (in the case of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neutrum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a single &#8220;t&#8221;, after the noun).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some examples:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En katt &#8211; katt<\/span><\/i><b><i>at<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a cat &#8211; cat)<\/span><\/i><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ett hus &#8211; hus<\/span><\/i><b><i>et<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a house &#8211; the house)<\/span><\/i><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will also find multiple examples of compound words, some of them curious. Here is a brief list with the Swedish word, the literal translation and finally the meaning of the word: <\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gr\u00f6nsak (green+thing): vegetable.<\/span><\/i><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ordbok (words+book): dictionary.<\/span><\/i><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glas\u00f6gon (glass+eyes): glasses.<\/span><\/i><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gr\u00e4smatta (grass+carpet): lawn.<\/span><\/i><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sjukhus (sick+home): hospital.<\/span><\/i><\/li><\/ul><h2>Adjectives<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Adjectives change according to the number and gender of the noun they accompany<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neutrum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we will add a &#8220;t&#8221;, and in the case of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">utrum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we will not make any changes:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ett fin<\/span><b>t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hus (a nice house).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, soffa (a nice sofa)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the adjective accompanies a plural noun, we will add an a:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">End<\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hus.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">End<\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> soffor.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To this brief outline, we should add the irregular forms of the adjective.<\/span><\/p><h2><strong>Pronunciation<\/strong><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenge lies in the fact that Swedish has more vowels than languages like Spanish, and that they can be pronounced long or short.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Swedish alphabet consists of 29 letters, 9 of which are vowels (a, e, i, o, u, y, \u00e5, \u00e4, \u00f6).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a general rule, they are pronounced long when followed by a single consonant and short when followed by two consonants.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pronunciation is one of the points on which more emphasis is needed. This difference can be seen in the following pairs of words, where the first is pronounced long and the second short: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glas-glass<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ice-glass), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sil-sill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sieve-sandstone), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tak-tack<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (roof-thanks).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of our learning, it is important to exaggerate the duration of the vowels and to practice frequently.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As can be seen, the difference between words is minimal, but the meaning varies enormously, hence the importance of pronunciation.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will also find consonant clusters.
